Mail, calendar, contacts and tasks in one server.
-
NVMe storage
Fast search across large mailboxes.

Why Run Zimbra on Your Own VPS
Hosted mail charges per mailbox and stores your messages on the provider's servers. Zimbra puts the mail server in your hands.
-
Mail on your own server
Messages, calendars and contacts stay in the datacentre location you choose.
-
Many domains on one server
Host the mail of several domains on one server, up to the account limit of your Zimbra licence.
-
Webmail, calendar and contacts included
A web client plus standard IMAP, POP3 and SMTP for the mail apps you already use.
-
Full control of the server
Root SSH access for tuning, certificates and your own policies.
How Zimbra Is Set Up
Zimbra bundles its mail pipeline and web proxy, so one installer produces the whole stack.
Request from a browser or app (HTTPS)
-
Web and mail proxy
NGINX (bundled)
HTTPS for webmail and TLS for IMAP, POP3 and SMTP connections.
-
Mail transfer
Postfix (bundled)
Receives and sends mail, with spam and virus filtering in the pipeline.
-
Mailbox server
Zimbra mailbox service
Mailboxes, calendar, contacts, tasks and the admin console.
-
Directory and data
LDAP and database (bundled)
Accounts, domains and settings.
-
Mail storage
NVMe on the VPS
Messages and the search index.
Worth knowing
- Zimbra installs its own copies of Postfix, NGINX and the other services under /opt/zimbra; its guide says it should be the only application suite on the server.
- Zimbra 10.1 needs a licence key (a trial from Zimbra, or one you buy) to create accounts. We do not supply it.
- It needs a fully qualified hostname, an MX record for your domain and a matching reverse DNS entry before it can send mail reliably.
- Mail needs several open ports (SMTP, submission, IMAP, POP3 and HTTPS); the firewall is opened for the ones you use.
- Back up /opt/zimbra and use a VPS snapshot before every upgrade.

Which Plan for Your Zimbra Server
Zimbra's installation guide sets a minimum of 8 GB of RAM for a single server, and about 100 GB of free disk for software and logs in production, plus space for mail. VPS-1 is below the memory minimum.
| Workload | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Evaluation and testing | VPS-2 4 vCores · 8 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM, the minimum, and 75 GB NVMe. |
| A few users, with mail kept small | VPS-3 6 vCores · 12 GB RAM | 12 GB RAM and 100 GB NVMe; less disk than Zimbra's production guide. |
| Production use | VPS-4 8 vCores · 24 GB RAM | 24 GB RAM and 200 GB NVMe, enough for Zimbra's production disk guidance and mailboxes. |
A starting point, not a limit: every plan upgrades in place, keeping your data, IP address and configuration.

Installed and Secured Before You Log In
The VPS is unmanaged: after handover the server is yours to run. Before that, our engineers do the first setup once, free, so you start from a hardened server with Zimbra in place.

Your Zimbra setup
- Zimbra Collaboration installed on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or Rocky Linux, operating systems Zimbra lists as supported
- The installer prerequisites Zimbra's guide asks for (such as netcat, and AppArmor off on Ubuntu)
- Hostname set and a Let's Encrypt certificate for the mail hostname
- Firewall opened for the mail and web ports you use
- The first administrator account created for you, once you have a Zimbra licence key to enter
- Reverse DNS for the server's IP set to your mail hostname, on request
- DNS records (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC) left for you to publish; we tell you which
Yours to run after handover
- Ongoing server administration
- Application maintenance and updates
- Debugging your code
- Migrating existing sites or data
Not included in the free setup, but we can quote for it. No control panel by default: CloudPanel, HestiaCP or Virtualmin on request at no cost; cPanel and Plesk need their own licence.

Security and Performance for Zimbra
Security
- Keep the admin console (port 7071) closed to the internet; use an SSH tunnel or VPN.
- Apply Zimbra patch releases promptly: mail servers are constant targets.
- Require strong passwords and turn on two-factor authentication for users.
- Monitor the mail queue and logs; we do not monitor your server.
- Zimbra's licence service sends licence and usage data to Zimbra; read its licence terms.
Performance
- Give Zimbra enough RAM; a memory-starved install is slow and unstable.
- Keep free disk space for the search index and mail queue.
- Keep antispam and antivirus signatures updating.
- Plan DNS carefully before moving a live domain: lower the MX TTL first.
