Postfix VPS HostingA Mail Server or SMTP Relay You Control
Postfix is one of the most widely used mail transfer agents. We install it on a hardened KVM VPS either as a full mail server with Dovecot for IMAP, or as a send-only relay your applications use to send mail.
Full root & SSH NVMe storage Daily backups Anti-DDoS 99.9% uptime SLA 11 locations
-
Dedicated IPv4 and IPv6
Your own sending addresses.
-
Full root access
Every Postfix setting is yours.
-
NVMe storage
Fast queues and mailboxes.
-
Daily backups
Automatic backup of the previous 24 hours.
Why Run Postfix on a VPS
A mail server is a small program with big consequences. Postfix is well documented, light on resources and runs for years with little change.
-
Light on resources
Postfix and Dovecot run comfortably on a small plan.
-
A relay for your applications
Send application mail through your own server instead of a third-party service.
-
Mailboxes without a mail suite
Postfix with Dovecot gives IMAP mailboxes without the weight of a groupware product.
-
Rules you set
Routing, limits and filtering under your control.
How Postfix Is Set Up
Postfix receives and sends mail; Dovecot serves mailboxes; OpenDKIM signs outgoing mail.
Request from a browser or app (HTTPS)
-
Mail transfer
Postfix
Receives mail from the internet and sends your outgoing mail.
-
Mailbox access
Dovecot
IMAP and authentication for mail apps (mail-server setup only).
-
Signing
OpenDKIM
DKIM signatures on outgoing mail for your domain.
-
Certificates
Let's Encrypt
TLS for SMTP submission and IMAP.
-
Storage
NVMe on the VPS
Mail queue and mailboxes.
Worth knowing
- A send-only relay needs no Dovecot and no mailboxes: applications connect and Postfix delivers.
- Mail needs a fully qualified hostname, a matching reverse DNS entry (we can set it for your IP on request), and SPF, DKIM and DMARC records.
- Outbound port 25 is open on our VPS plans, but receiving servers still judge your IP and records before accepting mail.
- Back up /etc/postfix, /etc/dovecot and the mailbox folders together.
What You Can Run
-
An application SMTP relay
Send password resets and notifications from your apps.
-
A small mail server
Mailboxes for a few domains over IMAP.
-
Mail forwarding and aliases
Receive for a domain and forward to other addresses.
-
Internal-only mail
Mail between your own systems, never sent to the internet.
-
A mail gateway
Receive, filter and pass mail on to another server.
-
A mail test environment
Test how your software behaves with a real SMTP server.

Which Plan for Your Postfix Server
Mailbox storage and any spam filtering drive the size, not Postfix itself.
| Workload | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A send-only relay | VPS-1 2 vCores · 4 GB RAM | 2 vCores and 4 GB RAM; far more than a relay needs. |
| A small mail server | VPS-1 2 vCores · 4 GB RAM | Postfix and Dovecot with room for mailboxes. |
| Many mailboxes and filtering | VPS-2 4 vCores · 8 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM and 75 GB NVMe. |
| Large mailboxes or archives | VPS-3 6 vCores · 12 GB RAM | 100 GB NVMe and 6 vCores. |
A starting point, not a limit: every plan upgrades in place, keeping your data, IP address and configuration.
SMTP Service or Your Own Postfix Server?
A relay service removes the deliverability work. Postfix gives you the server and the responsibility.
| Feature | Hosted SMTP service | Postfix VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Per message volume | Flat server cost |
| Deliverability | Managed by the provider | Yours: reverse DNS, SPF, DKIM and DMARC |
| Limits and rules | Set by the provider | Set by you |
| Mailboxes | Usually not included | Add Dovecot for IMAP mailboxes |
| Server administration | Handled by the provider | Yours, after our free setup |

Looking After Your Postfix Server
Day-to-day tasks after handover.
-
Check the configuration
Reports mistakes before you reload.
-
Reload after changes
Apply a new configuration.
-
See the mail queue
Waiting and deferred messages.
-
Follow the mail log
Useful when testing delivery.
-
Test a send
Send a message from the command line (needs the mailutils package).
# 1. Check the configuration
sudo postfix check
# 2. Reload after changes
sudo systemctl reload postfix
# 3. See the mail queue
sudo postqueue -p
# 4. Follow the mail log
sudo journalctl -u postfix -f
# 5. Test a send
echo "test" | mail -s "Postfix test" [email protected]
Example commands; adjust names, paths and versions to your project. Deploying and maintaining your application is yours to do (or ask us for a quote).
Installed and Secured Before You Log In
The VPS is unmanaged: after handover the server is yours to run. Before that, our engineers do the first setup once, free, so you start from a hardened server with Postfix in place.
-
Choose a plan and location
Pick the resources you need and the datacentre closest to your users.
-
Tell us your Postfix setup
Versions, database and domain: at order or right after.
-
We install and secure it
Server hardened, Postfix installed and tested, HTTPS on your domain.
-
You take over with root
SSH access to a working server, ready for your code and data.
Your Postfix setup
- Postfix configured as a mail server or as a send-only relay, as you choose at order
- Dovecot for IMAP when you want mailboxes
- OpenDKIM with a key for your domain
- A Let's Encrypt certificate for the mail hostname
- DNS records (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC) left for you to publish; we tell you which
Yours to run after handover
- Ongoing server administration
- Application maintenance and updates
- Debugging your code
- Migrating existing sites or data
Not included in the free setup, but we can quote for it. No control panel by default: CloudPanel, HestiaCP or Virtualmin on request at no cost; cPanel and Plesk need their own licence.

Who a Postfix VPS Suits

Application mail through a server you run.
-
Small teams with a few mailboxes
IMAP mail without a heavy suite.
-
Administrators who like control
People comfortable with mail server configuration.
Security and Performance for Postfix
Security
- Never run an open relay: only authenticated users and your own applications may send.
- Require TLS and authentication on the submission port.
- Keep rate limits on so a hacked account cannot send thousands of messages.
- Watch the log and queue; we do not monitor your server.
Performance
- Set the hostname and reverse DNS to match before sending.
- Warm up a new IP slowly; large first sends get filtered.
- Keep the queue short: bounce or fix stuck messages quickly.
- Keep free disk space for the queue and mailboxes.
