Why Run WordPress on a VPS
Shared and managed WordPress hosting decide your PHP limits, caching and allowed plugins. On a VPS you make those decisions yourself.
-
Your own caching stack
Combine NGINX FastCGI cache or a page-cache plugin with Redis object caching, configured for your site rather than a host-wide default.
-
No plugin or PHP limits
Raise memory_limit and max_execution_time, run heavy importers and use plugins that some managed hosts block.
-
Several sites, one bill
Host a Multisite network or many separate installs, each with its own database and PHP-FPM pool.
-
Real cron and WP-CLI
Replace WP-Cron with a system cron job, and handle updates, users and search-replace from the command line.
A Production WordPress Server
Each layer puts a cache in front of the slower one behind it.
Request from a browser or app (HTTPS)
-
Web server
NGINX (or Apache)
Handles HTTPS and media files and, with FastCGI cache, serves whole pages to logged-out visitors.
-
PHP runtime
PHP-FPM + OPcache
Runs WordPress, themes and plugins; OPcache keeps compiled PHP in memory.
-
Object cache
Redis
Keeps the results of repeated database queries, so pages need fewer MySQL calls.
-
Database
MariaDB or MySQL
Posts, options, orders and users, listening on localhost only.
Worth knowing
- Choose Apache if your plugins write .htaccess rules; NGINX needs those rules in the server block.
- WooCommerce cart, checkout and account pages must be excluded from page caching.
- Set DISABLE_WP_CRON in wp-config.php and run wp cron event run from a system cron.
- Use WP-CLI for bulk updates, and for search-replace when a domain changes.
What You Can Run
-
Busy blogs and news sites
Large archives and traffic spikes, served mostly from page cache.
-
WooCommerce stores
Catalogues and checkouts with Redis object caching on reserved resources.
-
WordPress Multisite
A network of sites for a company, school or franchise on one install.
-
Agency client sites
Many installs on one server, each with its own user and database.
-
Membership and LMS sites
LearnDash, MemberPress and similar sites where logged-in traffic cannot be page-cached.
-
Headless WordPress
WordPress as a content API behind a Next.js or other front end.

Which Plan for Your WordPress Server
Cached pages cost almost nothing. Logged-in users, WooCommerce carts and admin work are what use CPU and RAM.
| Workload | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Blog or company site | VPS-1 2 vCores · 4 GB RAM | Page cache serves most visitors; 4 GB is plenty. |
| WooCommerce store | VPS-2 4 vCores · 8 GB RAM | Cart and checkout bypass page cache and need PHP workers. |
| Membership, LMS or busy store | VPS-3 6 vCores · 12 GB RAM | Mostly logged-in traffic: more vCores and RAM. |
| Multisite or many client sites | VPS-4 8 vCores · 24 GB RAM | Room for dozens of installs and databases. |
A starting point, not a limit: every plan upgrades in place, keeping your data, IP address and configuration.
Managed WordPress or a WordPress VPS?
Both run WordPress well. The difference is who runs the server.
| Feature | Managed WordPress hosting | WordPress VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Server administration | Handled for you | Yours, after our free setup |
| Root and SSH access | No | Yes |
| Web server and caching | LiteSpeed, set up for you | NGINX or Apache, your choice |
| PHP limits and plugins | Host defaults | Your settings |
| Sites per server | Set by the plan | As many as resources allow |
| Best for | Owners who want WordPress to just work | Developers, agencies and stores that need control |

Working With Your WordPress VPS
Everyday tasks with WP-CLI, which we install alongside WordPress.
-
Update core, plugins and themes
Run from the site directory.
-
Turn on Redis object caching
Using the Redis Object Cache plugin.
-
Run WP-Cron from system cron
Scheduled tasks run on time without slowing page loads.
-
Back up the database
Keep a copy off the server too.
# 1. Update core, plugins and themes
cd /var/www/example.com
wp core update && wp plugin update --all && wp theme update --all
# 2. Turn on Redis object caching
wp plugin install redis-cache --activate
wp redis enable
# 3. Run WP-Cron from system cron
wp config set DISABLE_WP_CRON true --raw
(crontab -l; echo "*/5 * * * * cd /var/www/example.com && wp cron event run --due-now") | crontab -
# 4. Back up the database
wp db export ~/backups/db-$(date +%F).sql
Example commands; adjust names, paths and versions to your project. Deploying and maintaining your application is yours to do (or ask us for a quote).
Installed and Secured Before You Log In
The VPS is unmanaged: after handover the server is yours to run. Before that, our engineers do the first setup once, free, so you start from a hardened server with WordPress in place.
-
Choose a plan and location
Pick the resources you need and the datacentre closest to your users.
-
Tell us your WordPress setup
Versions, database and domain: at order or right after.
-
We install and secure it
Server hardened, WordPress installed and tested, HTTPS on your domain.
-
You take over with root
SSH access to a working server, ready for your code and data.
Your WordPress stack
- NGINX or Apache, your choice
- PHP-FPM with OPcache and the extensions WordPress recommends
- MariaDB or MySQL with a database and user for WordPress
- WordPress installed on your domain with HTTPS
- Redis object cache and WP-CLI
Yours to run after handover
- Ongoing server administration
- Application maintenance and updates
- Debugging your code
- Migrating existing sites or data
Not included in the free setup, but we can quote for it. No control panel by default: CloudPanel, HestiaCP or Virtualmin on request at no cost; cPanel and Plesk need their own licence.

Who a WordPress VPS Suits
-
Developers and agencies
You want control over PHP, caching and server config across client sites.
-
Stores outgrowing shared plans
WooCommerce shops where checkout slows down during sales.
-
Owners comfortable with SSH
You, or someone on your team, can update WordPress and the server.
Security and Performance for WordPress
Security
- Keep core, themes and plugins updated: most WordPress compromises use known plugin flaws.
- Block xmlrpc.php unless you need it, and limit login attempts.
- Set file permissions so PHP cannot rewrite wp-config.php or core files.
- Delete themes and plugins you do not use.
Performance
- Page caching for logged-out visitors, Redis for object caching.
- Size PHP-FPM workers for logged-in traffic, which page caches cannot serve.
- Run WP-Cron from a system cron job so it does not slow page loads.
- Trim autoloaded options and old revisions as the database grows.
