Why Run LAMP on a VPS
Most PHP software is written and tested against Apache and MySQL. A VPS keeps that compatibility and removes the limits of a shared account.
-
.htaccess keeps working
Apache reads .htaccess files, so the rewrite rules and access controls shipped with WordPress, Joomla, Drupal or older PHP apps work without converting them to another web server's syntax.
-
Your PHP version and extensions
Run the PHP version your code supports, a second one beside it if needed, and install extensions such as imagick, intl or sodium without asking a host.
-
A database tuned for one workload
Set the InnoDB buffer pool, connection limits and slow-query logging for your own tables instead of sharing a MySQL server with hundreds of accounts.
-
No shared-hosting ceilings
Long imports, cron jobs every minute, large uploads and extra Apache modules are your call, limited only by the plan's CPU and RAM.
How a LAMP Server Fits Together
Four layers, each with one job. A request reaches Apache first; Linux sits underneath everything.
Request from a browser or app (HTTPS)
-
Web server
Apache HTTP Server
Terminates HTTPS, serves static files, applies .htaccess rules and hands PHP requests on.
-
Application
PHP (PHP-FPM or mod_php)
Runs your code. PHP-FPM with the event MPM is the modern default; mod_php remains an option for apps that need it.
-
Database
MySQL or MariaDB
Stores your data and listens on localhost only, so it is not reachable from the internet.
-
OS
Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky)
Ubuntu LTS is the usual choice. The firewall, Fail2ban and security updates run at this layer.
Worth knowing
- Apache's event MPM with PHP-FPM uses far less memory per connection than prefork with mod_php.
- Each site gets its own virtual host and document root, and can run as its own Linux user with its own PHP-FPM pool.
- MariaDB is a drop-in replacement for MySQL for most PHP apps, and the default database on Debian.
- Redis or Memcached can be added later for sessions and object caching without changing the stack.
What You Can Run on a LAMP VPS
-
WordPress and WooCommerce
Software that expects Apache and .htaccess, with room for object caching and large media libraries.
-
Joomla, Drupal and other PHP CMSs
Several CMS installs on one server, each in its own virtual host.
-
Legacy PHP applications
Older code that depends on .htaccess rewrites or a specific PHP version, moved off shared hosting without a rewrite.
-
Laravel, Symfony and CodeIgniter
PHP frameworks run well behind Apache too: point the document root at the public folder.
-
Moodle and intranet tools
Learning platforms, intranets and admin panels that need their own database and frequent cron runs.
-
Client sites for agencies
Many small PHP sites on one server, separated by virtual host and Linux user.

Which Plan for Your LAMP Server
Size for PHP workers and the database: each PHP-FPM worker often uses 40–100 MB, and MySQL wants most of what is left.
| Workload | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few brochure sites or a blog | VPS-1 2 vCores · 4 GB RAM | Plenty of room for Apache, PHP-FPM and a small MariaDB database. |
| Busy WordPress or Joomla site | VPS-2 4 vCores · 8 GB RAM | More PHP workers and a larger InnoDB buffer pool. |
| WooCommerce or Moodle with logged-in users | VPS-3 6 vCores · 12 GB RAM | Logged-in traffic bypasses page caches, so CPU and RAM matter. |
| Agency server with many client sites | VPS-4 8 vCores · 24 GB RAM | Room for many virtual hosts, PHP-FPM pools and databases. |
A starting point, not a limit: every plan upgrades in place, keeping your data, IP address and configuration.
LAMP on Shared Hosting or on a VPS?
The same stack either way. What changes is who controls it and how much of the server is yours.
| Feature | Shared cPanel hosting | LAMP VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Apache configuration | .htaccess only | Full: virtual hosts, modules, MPM |
| PHP versions | Chosen from the host's list | Any, several side by side |
| MySQL settings | Shared server, fixed limits | Your own server, your settings |
| Cron and long jobs | Limited frequency and run time | Limited only by the plan |
| Server administration | Done by the host | Yours, after our free setup |
| Best for | Small sites that just need to work | Sites and apps that need control |

Your First LAMP Site After Handover
A typical first deploy over SSH, into the virtual host and database we set up.
-
Upload your code
Clone your repository into the site's document root.
-
Import the database
Load your SQL dump into the database we created.
-
Set permissions
Only upload and cache folders should be writable by the web server.
-
Reload Apache
Check the configuration, then apply it without dropping connections.
# 1. Upload your code
cd /var/www/example.com
git clone [email protected]:you/site.git .
# 2. Import the database
mysql -u app -p app_db < backup.sql
# 3. Set permissions
sudo chown -R deploy:www-data . && sudo chmod -R g+w uploads
# 4. Reload Apache
sudo apachectl configtest
sudo systemctl reload apache2
Example commands; adjust names, paths and versions to your project. Deploying and maintaining your application is yours to do (or ask us for a quote).
Installed and Secured Before You Log In
The VPS is unmanaged: after handover the server is yours to run. Before that, our engineers do the first setup once, free, so you start from a hardened server with LAMP in place.

Who a LAMP VPS Suits
-
Sites outgrowing shared hosting
PHP sites hitting CPU, process or execution-time limits that need the same stack with more room.
-
Developers and agencies
People comfortable on the command line who want Apache, PHP and MySQL configured their way across several projects.
-
Teams with legacy PHP
Applications tied to Apache behaviour or a PHP version that managed hosts no longer offer.
Security and Performance on a LAMP Server
Security
- Keep MySQL bound to localhost and give each app a database user with only the privileges it needs.
- Turn off directory listing and version banners (ServerTokens Prod, expose_php = Off).
- Run each site as its own user with its own PHP-FPM pool, so one compromised site cannot read another.
- Keep PHP, your CMS and its plugins updated: outdated application code is the usual way in.
Performance
- Enable OPcache; it is the largest single speed-up for PHP.
- Size pm.max_children to the RAM left over after MySQL, not to the total.
- Give the InnoDB buffer pool enough memory to hold your working data set.
- Serve static files with long cache headers and enable HTTP/2 and compression.
