Why Use Virtualmin on a VPS
Virtualmin is one of the longest-running free hosting panels. It sits on Webmin, so you can also manage the server itself from the same login.
Free GPL edition
The install script puts Virtualmin GPL on your server by default. The licence is GPL-3.0.
A whole hosting stack
The installer sets up a database, Postfix and Dovecot for mail, PHP, BIND for DNS, and SpamAssassin and ClamAV for filtering.
Virtual servers per domain
Each domain gets its own virtual server with its own users, mailboxes and settings.
Webmin underneath
Beyond hosting, Webmin lets you manage services, users, packages and files on the server.
How a Virtualmin Server Is Put Together
Virtualmin sits on Webmin and configures the standard Linux services under it.
-
Control panel
Virtualmin on Webmin
The browser panel on port 10000 and the virtualmin command line.
-
Web and apps
Web server and PHP
Serve each domain's site; the installer also lists Python and Ruby support.
-
Mail and DNS
Postfix, Dovecot, BIND
Send and receive mail and answer DNS. SpamAssassin and ClamAV filter spam and viruses.
-
Database
MariaDB or MySQL
One database server with a database and user per site.
Engineer's notes
- The install script is for a freshly installed operating system only. Never run it on a server that already hosts sites.
- The script installs Virtualmin GPL by default. Virtualmin Pro needs a serial number and key.
- Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS are in Virtualmin's top support grade for the install script.
- The panel uses port 10000 with a self-signed certificate, so your browser warns on first visit.
- 443HTTPS, your sites
- 80HTTP, redirects to HTTPS
- 22SSH, you only

What You Can Run
Many domains
A virtual server per domain with its own site, mail and database.
Business email
Mail domains, mailboxes and aliases on your own server.
Your own DNS
Zones for your domains, served by BIND.
PHP, Python and Ruby sites
Apps in the languages the installer supports.
Mailing lists
The installer includes Mailman for lists.
Server administration
Webmin modules for services, users, packages and logs.
Which Plan for Your Virtualmin Server
Domain count, mailbox count and the spam and virus filters decide the size.
VPS-2
4 vCores and 8 GB RAM, with room for ClamAV and SpamAssassin.
A starting point, not a limit: every plan upgrades in place, keeping your data, IP address and configuration.
Installing Virtualmin on Your Server
If you ask us at order, the free setup installs Virtualmin for you. To do it yourself on a freshly installed Ubuntu LTS server, run the official installer as root.
-
Start from a clean server
Use a freshly installed operating system. The installer is not for upgrades.
hostnamectl set-hostname panel.example.com -
Download the install script
It comes from the Virtualmin install repository on GitHub.
wget -O virtualmin-install.sh https://raw.githubusercontent.com/virtualmin/virtualmin-install/master/virtualmin-install.sh -
Run it as root
It installs Virtualmin GPL with the mail, DNS, database and filtering software.
/bin/sh virtualmin-install.sh -
Run the post-install wizard
Sign in on port 10000 and answer the wizard's questions about databases and filtering.

Security and Performance for Virtualmin
Security
- Keep Ubuntu, Webmin and Virtualmin updated; the panel runs as root.
- Limit port 10000 to your own IP address when you can.
- Set SPF, DKIM and DMARC for every mail domain.
- Use a separate virtual server and user for each client.
Performance
- Turn off ClamAV on a small server if you do not need virus scanning.
- Give the database enough memory for your busiest site.
- Watch mail queue size; a stuck queue grows fast.
- Do not host heavy extra apps on the same server as mail.
