Paperclip VPS HostingA Control Room for Your AI Agents
Paperclip is an open-source Node.js server and web dashboard that organises AI agents into a company: goals, tasks, an org chart, budgets and approvals in one place. You bring the agents and API keys. We install Node.js and Paperclip on a hardened VPS so it keeps running around the clock.
Full root & SSH NVMe storage Daily backups Anti-DDoS 99.9% uptime SLA 11 locations
-
Always on
Agents wake for work and routines run on schedule, with your laptop off.
-
Data on your server
Tasks, history and settings stay on a server you control.
-
Kept apart from your devices
Agents only see what you put on the server.
-
Daily backups
Automatic backup of the previous 24 hours.
Why Run Paperclip on a VPS
Paperclip is built for work that runs without you watching. A laptop that sleeps is a poor home for that; a VPS stays online.
-
Agents and routines keep running
Scheduled routines and agents waiting for work need a server that is on all the time.
-
One place for the whole team of agents
Tasks, budgets and approvals in a single dashboard instead of many terminals.
-
Your data stays with you
Paperclip is self-hosted and needs no Paperclip account; your tasks and history live on your server.
-
Separate from your own machine
Agents work on a server you can rebuild, not on your personal computer.
How Paperclip Is Set Up
One Node.js process serves the API and the dashboard; agents are the tools it coordinates.

-
Agents
Your agents and adapters

Attachments and work products.
-
Access
SSH tunnel, VPN or a private bind
How you reach the dashboard without exposing it to the internet.
Worth knowing
- Paperclip's quick start runs in trusted local mode on the server itself; reach the dashboard through an SSH tunnel or a VPN such as WireGuard.
- For access from other devices, Paperclip has an authenticated mode with a private-network bind; read its deployment guide first.
- Agents that run on the server (Claude Code, Codex and similar) use the server's CPU and memory.
- You supply the agents and their API keys; costs with those providers are yours.
What You Can Use It For
-
Running a team of coding agents
Assign goals and tasks, and review the results in one dashboard.
-
Scheduled routines
Recurring work that creates tasks and wakes agents on a schedule.
-
Budget control
Track agent spend and pause work at limits you set.
-
Review and approval
Approval stages before work counts as done.
-
Several organisations
One deployment with separate companies, agents and histories.
-
Connecting an OpenClaw agent
Paperclip can coordinate OpenClaw agents running elsewhere or on the same server.

Which Plan for Your Paperclip Server
Size by where the agents run. These are our guides; Paperclip does not publish server sizes.
| Workload | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Paperclip with cloud-based agents | VPS-1 2 vCores · 4 GB RAM | 2 vCores and 4 GB RAM for the dashboard and database. |
| A few agents running on the server | VPS-2 4 vCores · 8 GB RAM | 4 vCores and 8 GB RAM for coding agents and their tools. |
| Several agents working at once | VPS-3 6 vCores · 12 GB RAM | 6 vCores and 12 GB RAM. |
| Many parallel runs or large repositories | VPS-4 8 vCores · 24 GB RAM | 8 vCores, 24 GB RAM and 200 GB NVMe. |
A starting point, not a limit: every plan upgrades in place, keeping your data, IP address and configuration.
Agents by Hand or Paperclip on a VPS?
Paperclip adds the structure around your agents: tasks, budgets and approvals on a server that stays on.

Looking After Your Paperclip Server
Day-to-day tasks after handover. Run them as your non-root user.
-
Check Node.js
Paperclip needs Node.js 24.11 or newer.
-
Install or re-run onboarding
Official quick start; it keeps an existing configuration.
-
Change settings
Edit an existing configuration.
-
Open the dashboard from your computer
Run this on your own computer, then browse to http://localhost:3100.
-
Before updating
Take a VPS snapshot, and copy the Paperclip data and configuration directory (its location is in the installation guide).
# 1. Check Node.js
node --version
# 2. Install or re-run onboarding
npx paperclipai@latest onboard --yes
# 3. Change settings
npx paperclipai configure
# 4. Open the dashboard from your computer
ssh -L 3100:localhost:3100 admin@your-server
# 5. Before updating
free -h
df -h

Who a Paperclip VPS Suits
-
Developers running several coding agents
One dashboard instead of many terminals.
-
Small teams experimenting with agent workflows
A server you can rebuild and reset.
-
Builders of agent-run projects
Routines, budgets and approvals around autonomous work.
Security and Performance for Paperclip
Security
- Keep the dashboard private; use an SSH tunnel or a VPN rather than opening port 3100.
- Agents can act on anything they can reach: give each only the repositories, keys and accounts it needs.
- Set budgets so a runaway agent cannot spend without limit.
- Keep Paperclip, Node.js and the operating system updated. You remain responsible for what your agents do.
Performance
- Give agents that run on the server enough RAM; several coding agents at once need headroom.
- Use your own PostgreSQL for production instead of the embedded one.
- Keep free disk space for repositories, logs and attachments.
- Watch agent runs and spend in the dashboard; we do not monitor your server.
