OpenLiteSpeed VPS HostingLiteSpeed Caching With Full Root Access

OpenLiteSpeed is the free, open-source edition of the LiteSpeed web server, with page caching built in through LSCache. We install it with LSPHP and MariaDB on a hardened KVM VPS, so WordPress and other PHP sites get server-level caching on a server you control.

Full root & SSH NVMe storage Daily backups Anti-DDoS 99.9% uptime SLA 11 locations

  • NVMe storage

Cached pages and PHP files on fast disk.

  • Reserved vCores and RAM

LSPHP processes on resources that are yours.

  • Root and SSH access

Full control of the server and its config.

  • Daily backups

Automatic backup of the previous 24 hours.

Why a VPS

Why Choose OpenLiteSpeed on a VPS

OpenLiteSpeed pairs an event-driven web server with a built-in page cache, so PHP sites can be fast without a separate caching layer.

  1. Server-level page caching

LSCache caches pages inside the web server, and the LiteSpeed Cache plugin for WordPress manages it from your dashboard.

  2. Event-driven architecture

Like NGINX, it handles many connections with a few processes.

  3. LSPHP for PHP

LiteSpeed's own PHP handler (LSAPI) runs PHP efficiently alongside the server.

  4. Free and open source

No licence fee, unlike LiteSpeed Enterprise.

The stack

How an OpenLiteSpeed Server Works

The web server answers cached pages itself; only uncached requests reach PHP.

Request from a browser or app (HTTPS)

  1. Web server

    OpenLiteSpeed

    HTTPS, HTTP/3 and static files.

  2. Page cache

    LSCache

Cached pages served by the web server without running PHP.

  3. PHP runtime

    LSPHP (LSAPI)

PHP processes started and managed by OpenLiteSpeed.

  4. Database

    MariaDB or MySQL

    On localhost only.

  5. Admin

    WebAdmin console (port 7080)

Web-based configuration, reached through an SSH tunnel; the port stays closed in the firewall.

Worth knowing

  • OpenLiteSpeed reads rewrite rules from .htaccess, but only when the server restarts, not on every request.
  • Configuration changes take effect after a graceful restart.
  • The LiteSpeed Cache plugin for WordPress purges cached pages automatically when content changes.
  • LiteSpeed Enterprise shares LSCache but adds full Apache compatibility and needs a paid licence.

Sizing guide

Which Plan for Your OpenLiteSpeed Server

Cached pages cost almost nothing; size for uncached traffic, PHP processes and the database.

Recommended VPS plan for each OpenLiteSpeed workload
Workload Start with Why
A few WordPress sites VPS-1 2 vCores · 4 GB RAM LSCache serves most visitors from cache.
Busy site or WooCommerce store VPS-2 4 vCores · 8 GB RAM More LSPHP processes for uncached pages.
Many sites or heavy logged-in traffic VPS-3 6 vCores · 12 GB RAM 6 vCores and 12 GB RAM.
Agency server VPS-4 8 vCores · 24 GB RAM 24 GB RAM and 200 GB NVMe for many virtual hosts.

A starting point, not a limit: every plan upgrades in place, keeping your data, IP address and configuration.

Apache, NGINX or OpenLiteSpeed?

Three ways to serve PHP sites from your VPS, and where each one fits.

Feature Apache (LAMP) NGINX (LEMP) OpenLiteSpeed
Architecture Processes or threads Event-driven Event-driven
.htaccess Read on every request Not supported Rewrite rules, read on restart
Built-in page cache mod_cache FastCGI cache LSCache, with CMS plugins
HTTP/3 Not supported In recent versions Yes
Configuration Text files Text files Web console or text files
Best for Software that relies on .htaccess Busy sites and reverse proxies WordPress with LSCache

Working With OpenLiteSpeed

Everyday tasks: the admin console, restarts, the cache plugin and logs.

  1. Open the WebAdmin console

Tunnel the port over SSH, then browse to https://localhost:7080.

  2. Apply configuration changes

A graceful restart keeps connections alive.

  3. Install the WordPress cache plugin

Manages LSCache from the WordPress dashboard.

  4. Read the error log

The first place to look when something breaks.

# 1. Open the WebAdmin console

ssh -L 7080:127.0.0.1:7080 admin@your-vps

# 2. Apply configuration changes

sudo /usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl restart

# 3. Install the WordPress cache plugin

cd /var/www/example.com && wp plugin install litespeed-cache --activate

# 4. Read the error log

sudo tail -f /usr/local/lsws/logs/error.log

Free one-time setup

Installed and Secured Before You Log In

The VPS is unmanaged: after handover the server is yours to run. Before that, our engineers do the first setup once, free, so you start from a hardened server with OpenLiteSpeed in place.

  1. Choose a plan and location

Pick the resources you need and the datacentre closest to your users.

  2. Tell us your OpenLiteSpeed setup

Versions, database and domain: at order or right after.

  3. We install and secure it

Server hardened, OpenLiteSpeed installed and tested, HTTPS on your domain.

  4. You take over with root

SSH access to a working server, ready for your code and data.

Your OpenLiteSpeed stack

  • OpenLiteSpeed from the official LiteSpeed repository
  • LSPHP in the version you choose, with common extensions
  • MariaDB or MySQL with a database for your site
  • A virtual host for your domain with HTTPS
  • The WebAdmin console kept off the public internet

Yours to run after handover

  • Ongoing server administration
  • Application maintenance and updates
  • Debugging your code
  • Migrating existing sites or data

Not included in the free setup, but we can quote for it. No control panel by default: CloudPanel, HestiaCP or Virtualmin on request at no cost; cPanel and Plesk need their own licence.
