CodeIgniter runs almost anywhere, but production apps need the right PHP version, the command line and settings that shared hosting does not give you.

Worth knowing

  • Point the web root at public/ so app/, writable/ and .env stay outside it.
  • Set CI_ENVIRONMENT = production so errors are logged, not shown to visitors.
  • CodeIgniter 3 keeps index.php in the project root; application/ and system/ must not be reachable by URL.
  • Check which PHP versions your CodeIgniter 3 app supports before upgrading PHP.

Deploying a CodeIgniter 4 App

    Pull your changes and install production dependencies.

  2. Set production mode

    In .env, set CI_ENVIRONMENT = production and your database details.

  3. Run migrations

    Applies database changes.

  4. Clear the cache

    So new code and config take effect.
