01Why a VPS

Why Run nopCommerce on Your Own VPS

A hosted store platform ties you to its plans. nopCommerce is open source, so the server and the code are yours to run.

Your store, your server

Products, orders and customers live in a database you control.

Docker keeps it repeatable

The official repository ships a Dockerfile and a compose file, so the same stack runs on any server.

Root access for everything else

Add a payment plugin's dependencies, a cache or a backup job without asking anyone.

A choice of database

The official compose file uses SQL Server; the README also lists MySQL and PostgreSQL support.

02The stack

How a nopCommerce Server Is Set Up

NGINX gives you HTTPS and forwards to the nopCommerce container, which talks to the database container.

  1. Reverse proxy

    NGINX

HTTPS on your domain, forwarding to the nopCommerce container.

  2. Application

    nopCommerce on ASP.NET Core

Built from the repository's Dockerfile; listens on port 80 inside the container.

  3. Database

    SQL Server 2019 (Express)

The database service in the official compose file. MySQL and PostgreSQL are the alternatives.

  4. Files and data

    Docker volumes on NVMe

The database files and your uploaded images.

04 FILES AND DATA Docker volumes on NVMe 03 DATABASE SQL Server 2019 (Express… 02 APPLICATION nopCommerce on ASP.NET C… 01 REVERSE PROXY NGINX

Engineer's notes

  1. The current source targets .NET 10, and the Dockerfile builds and runs it on the .NET 10 images.
  2. The official compose file maps port 80 and sets a placeholder database password; change both before going live (the steps below do).
  3. It declares a volume but mounts none, so add a volume for the database or its data is lost when the container is removed.
  4. The official compose file builds the app from source, which uses CPU and RAM while it runs; the project also publishes an image, nopcommerceteam/nopcommerce, on Docker Hub.
  5. We did not find server sizes in the sources we could read, so the plan guidance here is ours; test with your own catalogue.
  • 443HTTPS, your reverse proxy
  • 80HTTP, redirects to HTTPS
  • 22SSH, you only
  • 8080nopCommerce container, bound to localhost behind the proxy
03Use cases

What You Can Run

An online store

Catalogue, cart, checkout and orders.

Multiple stores

Several storefronts from one nopCommerce install, as the platform supports.

A staging copy

Test a theme or plugin on a second compose project before the live store.

Plugins and themes

Extend the store with plugins you choose.

A development server

A shared environment for your .NET developers.

A migration target

Move an existing nopCommerce store onto a server you control.

Which Plan for Your nopCommerce Store

We could not read published server sizes, so this is our guidance. Test with your own products and traffic.

05After handover

Getting nopCommerce Running with Docker

These follow the docker-compose file in nopCommerce's repository. Check the repository for changes before you start.

  1. Check Docker is ready

We install Docker and the Compose plugin for you.

    docker --versiondocker compose version
  2. Get nopCommerce's files

The repository holds the Dockerfile and docker-compose.yml. The clone is large.

    git clone https://github.com/nopSolutions/nopCommercecd nopCommerce
  3. Set your own database password

Replace the placeholder SA_PASSWORD with a strong one. Bind the web port to localhost, for example 127.0.0.1:8080:80, so NGINX can use ports 80 and 443, and add a volume for the database.

    nano docker-compose.yml
  4. Start the stack

One command builds the app and starts it with the database.

docker compose up -d --builddocker compose ps
  5. Put HTTPS in front and finish the install

Point your domain at the server and proxy 443 to the container. nopCommerce then shows its own installation screen; follow its documentation for the store and database details.

sudo nginx -t && sudo systemctl reload nginx

Example commands: adjust names, paths and versions to your project. Deploying and maintaining your application is yours to do, or ask us for a quote.

06Cheat sheet

nopCommerce commands you will use every week

Copy, paste, adjust the names. Each one is safe to run as your own user on the server.

See the containers

docker compose ps

Follow the app log

docker compose logs -f nopcommerce_web

Restart the stack

docker compose restart

Rebuild after an update

git pulldocker compose up -d --build

Disk used by Docker

docker system df

Reload NGINX safely

sudo nginx -t && sudo systemctl reload nginx

Hosted Store Platform or nopCommerce on Your Own VPS?

A hosted platform removes the server work. Your own nopCommerce gives you the code and the data, and the server work with them.

Your nopCommerce server

Free one-time setup before you get access. Here is what happens, and what you receive.

  1. Pick a plan and a location

Resources that fit your workload, in the datacentre closest to your users.

  2. Tell us your nopCommerce setup

Versions, database and domain: at order or right after.

  3. We install and secure it

Server hardened, the stack installed and tested, HTTPS on your domain.

  4. You get root

SSH to a working server, ready for your code and data.

Installed for you

  • Docker with the Compose plugin installed
  • NGINX reverse proxy with HTTPS on your domain
  • Firewall open for SSH, HTTP and HTTPS only
  • Starting nopCommerce from its repository, the database password and the store setup are done by you, following nopCommerce's documentation

Secured before handover

  • Non-root sudo user created for daily work
  • SSH key login, password login for root disabled
  • Firewall (UFW) open only for the ports you use
  • Fail2ban blocking repeated login attempts
  • Automatic security updates enabled
  • Free Let's Encrypt SSL on your domain
  • Timezone, swap and hostname configured

Security and Performance for nopCommerce

Security

  • Change the database password from the repository's placeholder before the first start.
  • Never publish the database port; only NGINX should reach the web container.
  • Keep nopCommerce and the container images updated; take a VPS snapshot first.
  • Back up the database and uploaded files in addition to the daily VPS backups.

Performance

  • Leave RAM for SQL Server; it uses what it is given.
  • Build images off-peak, since the build takes CPU and memory.
  • Keep free disk space for images, logs and database growth.
  • Watch container memory with `docker stats` and move up a plan if it is tight.

Shared hosting vs VPS

Outgrown shared hosting? A VPS has no shared limits.

Shared hosting is a good place to start. When a busy site keeps hitting its account limits, a VPS removes them.

On shared hosting

  • CPU, memory and processes are capped per account, so traffic spikes hit the ceiling.
  • You share the server with other sites.
  • No root access, and only the software the host supports.
  • Background workers, queues and WebSockets are limited.

On your own VPS

  • CPU, RAM and NVMe storage are dedicated to your server, not shared with neighbours.
  • Your plan's resources are yours, with no per-account caps to hit.
  • Full root and SSH access: install any software you need.
  • Run workers, cron jobs, queues and WebSockets freely.

A VPS is unmanaged: we install and secure it for you, then you run it. Prefer us to run everything? See managed hosting.
