MongoDB VPS HostingYour Own Database Server, Locked Down
Run MongoDB on a server where the RAM is reserved for it and the data stays in the location you choose. We install MongoDB with authentication on, restrict network access to your app servers and hand you root SSH.
Full root & SSH NVMe storage Daily backups Anti-DDoS 99.9% uptime SLA 11 locations
-
Reserved RAM
The WiredTiger cache gets memory that is yours alone.
-
NVMe storage
Low-latency reads and writes for your collections.
-
Dedicated IPv4 and IPv6
Allow-list exactly which servers may connect.
-
Daily backups
Whole-server backup of the previous 24 hours.
Why Self-Host MongoDB on a VPS
Managed MongoDB is convenient but priced by cluster size. A VPS gives you a database server of your own at a fixed monthly cost.
-
RAM that belongs to the database
MongoDB is fastest when indexes and the working set fit in memory. Reserved RAM means no other customer competes for it.
-
A fixed monthly cost
Storage, connections and operations are not metered separately: you pay for the plan.
-
Data where you choose
Keep data in Mumbai for users in India, or in Europe, Canada or Asia-Pacific, on a server only you can access.
-
Your version, your configuration
Choose the MongoDB release, storage settings and indexes, and run mongodump on your own schedule.
A Secure MongoDB Server Layout
Applications connect over a restricted port; nothing else on the internet can reach the database.
Connection from your application server
-
Network
UFW allow-list
Port 27017 open only to your application servers, or closed entirely if the app runs on the same VPS.
-
Access
MongoDB authentication (SCRAM)
An admin user plus one user per application, with roles limited to its own database.
-
Database
mongod + WiredTiger
Stores your collections; by default the WiredTiger cache takes about half of the RAM.
-
Storage
NVMe disk
Data files and journal on fast local storage, with the whole server backed up daily.
Worth knowing
- Never run MongoDB without authentication on a public IP: automated scans find open databases quickly.
- Use TLS for connections that cross the internet, or a private tunnel such as WireGuard.
- A replica set needs three members (or two plus an arbiter); one VPS runs a standalone server.
- mongodump suits small databases; larger ones need a plan for consistent backups.
What a MongoDB VPS Is Used For
-
Back end for Node.js and MERN apps
A database server for one or more application servers.
-
Separating database from app
Move MongoDB off your app server so each can be sized on its own.
-
Event and analytics data
Logs, events and IoT readings stored as flexible documents.
-
Catalogue and content data
Products and CMS content with different attributes per item.
-
Development and staging
A shared MongoDB for your team's test environments.
-
Self-hosted apps built on MongoDB
Tools such as Rocket.Chat that use MongoDB as their database.

Which Plan for Your MongoDB Server
Size by working set: indexes plus the documents you read most should fit in the WiredTiger cache, which by default is half of the RAM minus 1 GB.
| Workload | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Development, staging or a small app | VPS-1 2 vCores · 4 GB RAM | About 1.5 GB of WiredTiger cache. |
| Production database for one app | VPS-2 4 vCores · 8 GB RAM | About 3.5 GB of cache and 75 GB NVMe. |
| Larger collections or several apps | VPS-3 6 vCores · 12 GB RAM | About 5.5 GB of cache and 6 vCores. |
| Large working set or analytics | VPS-4 8 vCores · 24 GB RAM | About 11.5 GB of cache and 200 GB NVMe. |
A starting point, not a limit: every plan upgrades in place, keeping your data, IP address and configuration.
Self-Hosted MongoDB or a Managed Cluster?
A managed service runs the database for you. A VPS gives you the same database for a fixed price, and the work is yours.
| Feature | Managed MongoDB service | MongoDB on a VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | By cluster tier and storage | Flat monthly plan |
| Backups | Managed, with restore options | Daily VPS backup plus your own dumps |
| Upgrades and scaling | Handled for you | You run them |
| Configuration | Provider options only | Full control |
| Data location | Provider regions | Any of our 11 locations |
| Server administration | Handled by the provider | Yours, after our free setup |

First Steps on Your MongoDB Server
Common first tasks with the admin credentials we hand over.
-
Connect with mongosh
Authenticate against the admin database.
-
Create a user for an app
One user per application, limited to its database.
-
Allow your app server
Add its address to bindIp in /etc/mongod.conf and open the port to that IP only.
-
Take a backup
A compressed archive you can copy off the server.
# 1. Connect with mongosh
mongosh -u admin -p --authenticationDatabase admin
# 2. Create a user for an app
mongosh -u admin -p --authenticationDatabase admin --eval 'db.getSiblingDB("shop").createUser({user: "shop", pwd: passwordPrompt(), roles: ["readWrite"]})'
# 3. Allow your app server
sudo nano /etc/mongod.conf
sudo ufw allow from 203.0.113.10 to any port 27017 proto tcp
sudo systemctl restart mongod
# 4. Take a backup
mongodump -u admin -p --authenticationDatabase admin --gzip --archive=$HOME/backups/mongo-$(date +%F).gz
Example commands; adjust names, paths and versions to your project. Deploying and maintaining your application is yours to do (or ask us for a quote).
Installed and Secured Before You Log In
The VPS is unmanaged: after handover the server is yours to run. Before that, our engineers do the first setup once, free, so you start from a hardened server with MongoDB in place.
-
Choose a plan and location
Pick the resources you need and the datacentre closest to your users.
-
Tell us your MongoDB setup
Versions, database and domain: at order or right after.
-
We install and secure it
Server hardened, MongoDB installed and tested, HTTPS on your domain.
-
You take over with root
SSH access to a working server, ready for your code and data.
Your MongoDB stack
- MongoDB Community Server from MongoDB's official repository
- Authentication on, with an admin user and a user for your app
- bindIp and the firewall limited to the servers you name
- mongosh and the database tools (mongodump, mongorestore)
Yours to run after handover
- Ongoing server administration
- Application maintenance and updates
- Debugging your code
- Migrating existing sites or data
Not included in the free setup, but we can quote for it. No control panel by default: CloudPanel, HestiaCP or Virtualmin on request at no cost; cPanel and Plesk need their own licence.

Who a MongoDB VPS Suits
-
Node.js and MERN teams
You need a MongoDB server for your app without per-cluster pricing.
-
Apps outgrowing free tiers
Storage or connection limits on free database plans are holding you back.
-
Teams that care where data lives
You want your data on a server in a specific country that only you can access.
Security and Performance for MongoDB
Security
- Keep authentication on and give each application only the roles it needs.
- Limit port 27017 to known IPs in the firewall, and set bindIp to match.
- Use TLS or a private tunnel for connections between servers.
- Stay on a supported release series; end-of-life versions get no security fixes.
Performance
- Index for your queries and check them with explain(); collection scans are the usual cause of slow queries.
- Keep the working set in RAM; when it no longer fits, move up a plan.
- Watch slow operations with the database profiler or mongostat.
- Avoid unbounded arrays and very large documents; the 16 MB limit is a design signal.
