01Why a VPS

Why Use CloudPanel on a VPS

CloudPanel keeps the panel simple and the stack modern, which suits developers who host more than just PHP.

More than PHP

Add PHP and WordPress sites, Node.js apps, Python apps, static sites and reverse proxies from the same panel.

Free SSL in one click

Install a Let's Encrypt certificate from the panel; it renews automatically.

Sites kept apart

Each site runs under its own system user, so one site cannot read another's files.

Safer access

Restrict access by IP, block bots, use basic authentication and turn on two-factor authentication for the panel.

02The stack

How a CloudPanel Server Is Put Together

NGINX is the front door. CloudPanel configures it, your apps and the database behind it.

  1. Control panel

    CloudPanel

The dashboard on port 8443 and the clpctl command line.

  2. Web server

    NGINX

Serves static files, passes PHP to PHP-FPM, and proxies to your Node.js or Python app.

  3. Applications

    PHP, Node.js, Python

Pick the language and version for each site; every site has its own user.

  4. Database

    MySQL or MariaDB

The engine and version are chosen when CloudPanel is installed.

Engineer's notes

  1. Choose the database engine at install time with the DB_ENGINE setting; the install page lists the MySQL and MariaDB versions per Ubuntu release.
  2. The panel listens on port 8443 with a self-signed certificate, so your browser warns on first visit.
  3. CloudPanel says to restrict port 8443 to your own IP in the firewall and to create the admin user quickly.
  4. CloudPanel's own site does not list a mail server. Plan on a separate mail provider for email.

What You Can Run

WordPress and PHP sites

PHP sites with a vhost template and the PHP version you choose.

Node.js apps

Apps listening on a port, proxied by NGINX with HTTPS.

Python apps

Python apps behind NGINX with their own site user.

Static sites

HTML, CSS and JavaScript sites served straight from NGINX.

Reverse proxies

Put NGINX with HTTPS in front of another service.

Sites behind Cloudflare

CloudPanel has a Cloudflare integration for visitor IPs.

Installing CloudPanel on Your Server

If you ask us at order, the free setup installs CloudPanel for you. To do it yourself on a fresh Ubuntu LTS server, follow the CloudPanel install page: the exact installer checksum changes with each release, so copy it from there.

  1. Prepare the server

Log in as root over SSH, update the system and install the tools the installer needs.

apt update && apt -y upgrade && apt -y install curl wget sudo
  2. Download and check the installer

Download install.sh from the address on the CloudPanel install page, then check its SHA-256 against the checksum published there.

    sha256sum install.sh
  3. Run it with your database choice

Set DB_ENGINE to the exact MySQL or MariaDB value listed for your Ubuntu version on the install page.

sudo DB_ENGINE=<value from the install page> bash install.sh
  4. Create the admin user

Open the panel on port 8443 straight away and create the admin user. Restrict the port to your IP.

    https://YOUR-SERVER-IP:8443

Example commands: adjust names, paths and versions to your project. Deploying and maintaining your application is yours to do, or ask us for a quote.

Security and Performance for CloudPanel

Security

  • Limit port 8443 to your own IP address in the firewall.
  • Create the admin user as soon as the install finishes, and turn on two-factor authentication.
  • Keep Ubuntu and CloudPanel updated.
  • Use a separate site user for each site, as CloudPanel does by default.

Performance

  • Choose the PHP version each site needs; do not run old versions by default.
  • Use the Redis and NGINX tools CloudPanel supports for caching.
  • Keep databases on the NVMe disk.
  • Put a CDN in front of static assets for busy sites.
